CARE International – Community Organised Primary Education, Afghanistan
In Afghanistan, an entire generation of children has been denied the right to an education. Over two decades of conflict and unrest has caused the destruction of infrastructure and the displacement of nearly one-third of the population. In the rural district of Nowar, there are only three schools for a population of about 100,000. Women and girls have been denied access to these schools.
In association with the charity CARE International, the Community Organised Primary Educational (COPE) project focused on improving access to education, improving the quality of education available, and building the capacity of communities to sustain the schools.
The donation of £27,500 from TRAID in 2002 covered the cost of establishing and building the capacity of 60 Village Education Committees to manage and operate their schools, providing school supplies, supplying teacher training, and co-ordinating conferences for schoolteachers and Village Education Committees.
